Il s&rsquo;agissait de colonnes cylindriques ovales plac\u00e9es sur le bord des routes pour marquer les distances. Le mot vient du latin \u00ab\u00a0miliarium\u00a0\u00bb et elles \u00e9taient plac\u00e9es tous les mille passus (doubles passes romaines), c&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire tous les milles romains, ce qui \u00e9quivaut \u00e0 une distance d&rsquo;environ 1 480 m\u00e8tres.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Les voies romaines ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es tout au long des si\u00e8cles suivants sans gu\u00e8re de modifications ou d&rsquo;extensions puisque, jusqu&rsquo;au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, l&rsquo;\u00c9tat n&rsquo;a pas pris en charge la construction de routes et la planification de la structure de communication existante, avec la signalisation correspondante. En effet, apr\u00e8s la publication de la premi\u00e8re loi pragmatique de Philippe II en 1586 pour baliser les routes dans les zones montagneuses, loi qui ne concernait que les territoires castillans, il faut attendre 1755 pour trouver une autre r\u00e9f\u00e9rence en la mati\u00e8re. L&rsquo;obligation de fournir des poteaux ou des piliers dans les cols de montagne est rappel\u00e9e par Thomas Manuel Fern\u00e1ndez de Mesa dans son trait\u00e9 sur les chemins publics et les auberges. En 1749, l&rsquo;Instrucci\u00f3n de Intendentes de Provincias avait ordonn\u00e9 la mise en place de panneaux aux endroits o\u00f9 deux ou plusieurs routes ou chemins se rencontraient.   <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f68fd96 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"f68fd96\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d8434ab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d8434ab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);\">Plus tard, en 1855, l&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur Espinosa publie un trait\u00e9 sur le trac\u00e9, la construction et la conservation des routes, et propose que \u00ab\u00a0les poteaux ou guides des lieux expos\u00e9s \u00e0 de fortes chutes de neige soient rendus solides, mais \u00e0 peu de frais ; il suffit de placer des piliers de pierre de taille grossi\u00e8re aux endroits o\u00f9 ils abondent, des prismes de ma\u00e7onnerie, des poteaux de bois ou des troncs d&rsquo;arbres \u00e9corc\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);\">\u00c0 partir de la seconde moiti\u00e9 du XIXe si\u00e8cle, la construction des routes s&rsquo;accompagne de l&rsquo;\u00e9laboration d&rsquo;instructions visant \u00e0 normaliser leur signalisation et leur marquage. Certaines routes \u00e9taient marqu\u00e9es par des leguarios, indiquant les distances en lieues jusqu&rsquo;aux principales villes. La legua est une ancienne unit\u00e9 de longueur qui exprime la distance qu&rsquo;une personne peut parcourir \u00e0 pied pendant une heure. Selon le type de terrain de chaque r\u00e9gion ou selon les convenances de l&rsquo;\u00c9tat, une legua couvre normalement des distances allant de 4 \u00e0 7 km. La circulaire du 15 octobre 1861 \u00e9tablit les crit\u00e8res d&rsquo;homog\u00e9n\u00e9isation des bornes hectom\u00e9triques, kilom\u00e9triques et myriom\u00e9triques, des bornes provinciales, des bifurcations et des d\u00e9nivellations, qui ont \u00e9volu\u00e9 vers la signalisation actuelle.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Les piliers de pierre ont continu\u00e9 \u00e0 servir de bornes sur certaines routes et autoroutes jusqu&rsquo;au premier tiers du 20e si\u00e8cle. D\u00e8s lors, avec l&rsquo;utilisation des v\u00e9hicules \u00e0 moteur et les travaux de d\u00e9neigement, la priorit\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9e au marquage des bords des routes afin d&rsquo;\u00e9viter les accidents caus\u00e9s par la sortie de route des v\u00e9hicules. <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">L&rsquo;instruction routi\u00e8re de 1939 \u00e9tablit pour la premi\u00e8re fois l&rsquo;aspect des poteaux pour les r\u00e9gions neigeuses, une structure en forme de poteau carr\u00e9 en b\u00e9ton arm\u00e9 de deux \u00e0 trois m\u00e8tres de haut surmont\u00e9 d&rsquo;une forme pyramidale. Cette pierre \u00e9tait g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement surmont\u00e9e d&rsquo;une croix grossi\u00e8re.
