The pylons that give this trail its name are the first signposts designed to help travelers avoid getting lost on the trails during snowy weather. However, signage for snowy conditions—as well as for trails and roads—has evolved over time. In this exhibit, we’ve gathered various elements that were used to mark early trails and roads, and we’ve also included examples of the different tools used for navigation during snowstorms.
This intriguing installation is located on the Camino de los Pilones between Fortanete and La Iglesuela del Cid. You’ll come across it as you walk along the trail. But if you’d like to visit by car, here are the directions from Fortanete:
Take the trail that leaves the village toward the Loreto Hermitage and continue to the right. Stay on the main trail, which climbs gradually and then continues through pine forests across flatter terrain. You’ll find the site on the right, at a wide fork in the trails, in the area known as “La Cruz Gorda,” where the base of an old wayside shrine (Peirón) is located (5.8 km).
