The shepherd

The few transhumant shepherds that are left in these lands still pass through the cattle routes of the territory. This is the route they take with their livestock to the wintering pastures of the Levant. The figure of the shepherd with his sheep is, in a way, a tribute to their work.
His figure can be found on the Camino de los Pilones between Fortanete and La Iglesuela del Cid, in the area known as Loma del Pinar. You will find him when you walk along the road. But if you want to visit it by car, these are the indications from La Iglesuela del Cid:
You take the road from La Iglesuela del Cid to Cantavieja and, a few meters away (1Km.), you take a track on the left that is signposted with indications of the mycological reserve of Maestrazgo. It is a track that ascends progressively up the hill, and you will find the shepherd with his sheep next to a wide crossroads, in front of a stone quarry (4Km.), right in the middle of a wide stretch of pylons.

To get there from Cantavieja you take the road towards Mosqueruela and, after 5 km, when you reach the Tarayuela viewpoint, you take a track on the left that is signposted with indications of the mycological reserve of Maestrazgo. It is a track that leads to the pine forest of La Nava. Always follow the main track. At the height of the shelter (a hut that stays on the left) follow this track without taking the detour on the right. Further on, on the right, you will start to see the first pylons and, shortly, you will reach a crossroads where you will find the shepherd with his sheep.
